Dana Point California Real Estate, Homes & Properties

As recently as the 1970's, Dana Point was a sleepy port village, relatively isolated from the rest of the bustling Southern California coast. Today it is a thriving, renowned city of more than 40,000, where boating and a strong tourism economy combine in one of the state's most picturesque oceanside settings.

So what brought about 30+ years of steady growth here? Like other places in the Los Angeles-San Diego corridor, the area became recognized as an ideal luxury home location, ideally situated between the larger centers, and safely removed from the dangers of overcrowding near the Interstate 5. In the years prior to the city's incorporation in 1989, rapid development in Dana Point served to link up several smaller communities in the area, leading to formation of a city that is as diverse as it is beautiful.

Welcome to Dana Point !

Dana Point real estate has so much to offer anyone who's in the market for a luxury home. The city is also a popular location for Southern California club residences, with many listings for large three and four storey houses on large, cultivated properties. Prices for an ocean view location start between 5 and 6 million. Dana Point also offers a wide selection of apartments and weekend getaway condos packed with features like private patios, jacuzzis and master en-suites. Real estate here was originally envisioned as part of a Spanish-style town with wide streets named after ship lanterns. Streetlights were installed resembling kerosene sailor lanterns, and some thoroughfares bear lengthy, distinct names such as Street of the Golden Lantern, and Street of the Blue Lantern.

Dana Point was famously called the only romantic spot in California by Richard Henry Dana Jr., a prominent 19th century East Coast U.S. politician and lawyer who published an account of his 1830's sea voyage to the California coast in a book titled Two Years Before the Mast. During the Gold Rush of 1849, his book was one of the few in existence that described California, making it an important tool for settlers as well as a literary classic. The town was subsequently named after Dana, but what was he referring to with that infamous quote? Likely he was simply entranced by the dramatic rocky bluffs wrapping around the point, and the calm clear waters of the harbor contrasting so much of the rest of Southern California's windswept coast.
